Abstract : Whether it is considered as the expression of constraint or of consent, wartime patriotism in Reunion conditioned the feeling of belonging to a nation. This gave way to the notion that Reunion had to be involved in the national destiny. The motherland was no longer merely an idea but a territory that had to be protected and on which all attention was focused. The desire to be part of the war effort was rooted in the desire for a national communion, a sacred union between mainland France and its Empire.
