Lecture psychosociologique de la relation famille-école à l'île de La Réunion

Abstract : The history of family in Reunion Island refers to the history of the island, which is rich in its different ethnical and cultural origins. In the intercultural context of the island, the psychosocial reading of the relationship between family and school shows how pupils’ parents perceive the school system. Dialogue between families and school, which is necessary for children’s success, is not always easy, even though parents’ important role and place have been recognized in the school system. Partnership in education between families and school – turned on the dialogue between parents and teachers – leans among others on everybody’s position towards school, as far as values, beliefs and opinions are concerned. Studies on social representation of the school system point out the fact that parents and teachers share the same values turned on learning methods and education. Thus, both groups’ social representations have the same essence. Moreover, similar opinions among parents and teachers can be found, above all about how to teach Creole, about bilingualism, discrimination and unequal opportunities. But mutual looks show that the perception of the reciprocal opinions is vague. Mutual prejudices could explain the difficult communication between families and school.
