Le XVIIIe, siècle des Lumières ou âge d'or de l'addition ? Illustration par la comptabilité de l'élite de la banque et du négoce

Abstract : Mathematics went through an inordinate development during the 17th and 18th centuries, which is amazing given the primitive nature of arithmetic instruments used by the best of traders and bankers.Glued in pre-algebric accountancy and im-mersed in archaic metrology (weights and measurements including money) as they were, operators conducted highly sophisticated and economically complex opera-tions, resting mainly on the sole addition an entirely reliable and valid accountancy that was implemented for two centuries, during which time mathematicians explored new fields and took flight into the world of abstractions.
