Abstract : On August 20, 1953, the Sultan of Morocco was deposed by France. After a brief stay in Corsica, Mohammed V was sent to Madagascar in exile, in January, 1954. He was to stay in Antsirabe until October 1955, at which date, the French, who were obliged to negotiate with him in order to solve the Moroccan crisis, allowed him to return to France. A few weeks later, his return to Morocco triggered off the process leading to independence.
