Enseignement et apprentissage du français à Chennaï (Inde) : diversité linguistique et développement d’une compétence plurilingue

Abstract : Chennai, the capital of South India, presents a true example of linguistic and cultural diversity. Although the majority of the inhabitants of Chennai have Tamil as their mother tongue, many of them from the other states of India have a second language. For example, one child in school speaks Tamil, English and Hindi, three languages are taught in school. But it is common to see children with two mother tongues (Kannada from Karnataka and Malayalam from Kerala) who also speak Tamil, English and Hindi. In recent years many private schools offer their students an education in French. In 2011, the Michelin Group creates an Anglo-French bilingual school for the children of expatriates in Chennai. Learning the French language in Indian schools and the sociolinguistic’s situation of a country like India, for Indian and French students, open to linguistic and cultural diversity has to promote development of plurilingual competence? The exploratory survey we conducted in the schools of Chennai, in January 2012, revealed that while the contextualization of teaching and learning of French promotes the development of plurilingual competence but competence in French learners and teachers are very limited. These exploratory investigations in Chennai will be pursued within the framework of a research project on the teaching and learning of French Indian multilingual context.
