In the works of Cuban writer Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, the shadow of the slave still looms over black people in today's society. The old prejudices are still rampant and alive, and are even revived by contingencies. Even if time has passed since the days of slavery, black peoplc today still have to find ways and means for their survival, not unlike in fonner times, which make thern an exarnple for others. Responding instantly in self~defence is still the rule, which ruins tlte fragile dignity recently acquired. Ifwe are to believe the short stories collected in this work, few black people manage to overcome the obstades piled up by cmTent circurnstances. Over-emphasis gives prominence to a few specific and yet very real issues, without resorting toan openly ideological tone. In this sense, one might even risk the phrase 'the catharsis of speech' to define Gutierrez's short stories.
