La construction politique d’une identité franco-mauricienne (1810-1968) : le discours identitaire comme gestion de la contradiction

Abstract : The paper focuses on the identity building strategies of a minority group in Mauritius, the Franco-Mauritians, as they had to face ethnic competition in the Mauritian plural society. How was an ethnic identity shaped and how did the Franco-Mauritian group eventually define itself as a community sharing a common origin and blood ties ? How did ethnic markers become meaningful despite the fact that ethnic boundaries kept changing throughout history? Identity in its political dimension therefore results to be a way to manage the contradiction which arises between the conflicts of interests and the need to preserve interethnic relations
