Plaidoyer pour une éducation durable

Abstract : In this article we present sustainable education as the main condition for every human being to have access to a really human existence. We understand life long learning as a learning process of know-how and personal accomplishment which lasts, which improves, evolves and allows an awareness of the specific role everyone should play in order to contribute to a sustainable society. This implies first a strong commitment of families which is not intended to complement institutional educational actions in schools. Parents’ fundamental role is to cherish their children and to be for them satisfactory models of identification in view of major values such as respect, autonomy, responsibility, solidarity and an ability to be willing to improve, to cooperate, etc. This also requires an institutional learning activity which, to be lasting, must include at least six dimensions : knowledge, ability to duplicate, to express, to write, to « transmit » and to be. Finally our perspective is life long learning, which becomes the major condition of the adaptability of the social subject. Beyond a subject’s ability to adapt to a changing environment, the term « adaptability » means his ability to act and to transform his environment according to his objectives. No doubt this is at this stage of its implementation that sustainable education should fully contribute to allow a part of the population presently living between exclusion and illusion to play a real role in society.
