Paroles d’adultes, représentations linguistiques et enseignement

Abstract : This article aims to analyze the discrepancy between linguistic facts and current systems of representation. Such systems are the product of a dominant and conservative ideology, which hardly takes into account the cognitive nature of linguistic competence and language acquisition, and reifies language, giving undue priority to writing, while French orthography is surprisingly dysfunctional. Moreover, the dominant ideology is ignorant about linguistic variation and heterogeneity. Its negative impact on Creole-speaking children’s achievements is examined, with particular attention to the context of Reunion Island.
