Les sports et leurs rires

Abstract : This study, based on the analysis of 25 interviews of sportsmen from 15 different sports – but homogeneous with regard to age and level – is an attempt at analysing laughter in sports at different phases (before, during and after the event). The functions of lautgther, sometimes source of tension, sometimes of de-dramatisation, contribute to contradictory perceptions of what should be the right atmosphere in a group. The sources of laughter and of its taboos vary from one sport to another. Some are indeed more sensitive than others to marks of status and age difference. Laughter makes it possible to analyse the cultural differences between sports shaping distinctive values.
