"Waren wir nicht früher woanders?" Bilder der Migration in Günter Eichs. Hörspiel Träume
Résumé
Based on Günter Eich's radio play Dreams, which was sent for the first time in 1951, the literary images of modern migration movements are set in relation to 'real' history. By increasing the close reading approach to a form of 'closest reading', secondary figures like the porters from the fourth
dream who are all condemned to silence are analyzed in order to make them speak. It turns out that even fifty years after the so-called 'Congo-atrocities' Eich completely underestimated the violence that had been experienced by the rubber-bearers under Leopold II, in the 'Free State of Congo'. The study of the history of these carriers shows that the intra-African migratory movements triggered by the European colonialism have never penetrated into the general consciousness.
