Théorie et pratique

Abstract : Generally considered as antithetic notions, theory and practice seem doomed to oppose each other endlessly, just as the men who stand for them do : on the one hand the theoretician, a dreamer unfit for reality, and , on the other hand the practician highly efficient but truly ignorant of the reasons of his success. Beyond an opposition verging occasionally on antagonism, isn't it possible to link the two notions, like the two mirroring sides of intelligent activity whenever it shifts from knowledge to action, or from action to knowledge? Between purely theoretical abstraction and immediate concrete practice, there may be gradations and ties involving the participation of imagination as a linking instrument. Deprived of mutual contacts, the practician will never understand what he does, and the theoretician will be doomed to impotency. Between intuition destitute of concept, and concept deprived of intuition, between the blind man and the impotent one, the actual exercise of intelligence shows that an intermediary solution can be suggested.
