Résumé
Generally considered as antithetic notions, theory and practice seem doomed to oppose each other endlessly, just as the men who stand for them do : on the one hand the theoretician, a dreamer unfit for reality, and , on the other hand the practician highly efficient but truly ignorant of the reasons of his success. Beyond an opposition verging occasionally on antagonism, isn't it possible to link the two notions, like the two mirroring sides of intelligent activity whenever it shifts from knowledge to action, or from action to knowledge? Between purely theoretical abstraction and immediate concrete practice, there may be gradations and ties involving the participation of imagination as a linking instrument. Deprived of mutual contacts, the practician will never understand what he does, and the theoretician will be doomed to impotency. Between intuition destitute of concept, and concept deprived of intuition, between the blind man and the impotent one, the actual exercise of intelligence shows that an intermediary solution can be suggested.
Présentées le plus souvent comme des notions antithétiques, théorie et pratique semblent condamnées à s’affronter en des combats sans fin, au même titre que les hommes qui les incarnent : le théoricien, rêveur inadapté au réel et le praticien, efficace certes, mais fondamentalement ignorant des raisons de son succès. Au-delà d’une opposition qui va parfois jusqu’à l’antagonisme, n’est-il pas possible de penser ensemble ces deux notions comme les deux versants, en miroir, de toute activité de l’intelligence lorsqu’on doit passer de la connaissance à l’action et de l’action à la connaissance ? Entre l’abstraction théorique pure et la pratique concrète immédiate, peut-être faut-il envisager des degrés et des liens où l’imagination jouerait le rôle d’instrument de liaison ? Sans contacts réciproques, le praticien ne saura jamais ce qu’il fait et le théoricien sera condamné à ne savoir rien faire. Entre l’intuition sans concept et le concept sans intuition, entre l’aveugle et l’impuissant, l’exercice même de l’intelligence en acte montre qu’une tierce solution est envisageable.
