La controverse à propos du statut phylogénétique de Toumaï : médiatisations et reputations

Abstract : In this paper, we focus on public science communication contracts. From the perspective of science studies, we consider the social communications surrounding the paleoanthropological controversy over the phylogenetic status of the Toumaï fossil, from the publication of its discovery in 2002 to very recent developments. The authors analyze the scientists’ arguments both in specialist scientific publications and in the media, arguing that the logics of public communication within the media affect the dynamics of the controversy. As scientific communication appears to be characterized by personification and professionalization, such processes are discussed, and shed light on the way in which scientists manage their reputations.
