The three component model and multiple commitments of volunteers

Abstract

The article examines the relevance of the three-component model of commitment for the depiction of volunteers' commitment to the volunteer organization and to beneficiaries. Continuance commitment (CC) to the organization is found to comprise sub-dimensions reflecting the perceived sacrifice associated with leaving (HiSac) and the perceived lack of employment alternatives (LoAlt). CC, Affective Commitment (AC) and Normative Commitment (NC) are described as the three forms that provide the reasons for volunteers deciding to stay with their organization. It is predicted that the relationship of commitments to beneficiaries to turnover intentions will be greater when AC to the organization is low.
