Microbial communities inhabiting sponges of the remote western Indian Ocean island of Mayotte.

Abstract

In the present study, we assessed the microbial communities inhabiting the common sponge species of the remote Western Indian Ocean island of Mayotte. The species investigated were the sponges: Paratetilla bacca, Jaspis splendens, Dragmacidon coccineum, Liosina paradoxa, Stylissa carteri, Stylissa massa, Petrosia aff. spheroida, Xestospongia testudinaria, Hyrtios erectus and Leucetta sp., belonging to six different sponge orders. In addition, the microbial communities of the sediment and the surrounding seawater was investigated. The sponges Dragmacidon coccineum and Petrosia aff. spheroida are restricted to the Western Indian Ocean while the other species have a wide distribution range, extending to the Eastern part of the Indo-Pacifiic. We compare the present results with earlier studies where we assessed the microbial communities of some of these sponge species from Indonesia.
