The Cult of Maréchal Pétain and the Enrolment of Youth under Governor Annet (1941–1942)
Abstract
Between July 1940 and November 1942, youth and Empire became the last human and geographical ramparts behind which the National Revolution attempted to conceal its powerlessness and defeats. Our aim is to highlight the expression of the youth and sports policies implemented in Madagascar between 1941 and 1942, through references to several sources of information. Vichy’s approach to sports in Madagascar is illustrated by the abundance and diversity of orientations and actions undertaken by the Governor-General. Lastly, we will cover the aspects of these policies: sporting and Catholic youth associations.
