TCP Syn Protection: An Evaluation

Richard Lorion

Abstract

The drop of initial TCP control packets can dramatically penalize flow performance. More the flow is small, more the penalty is important. This paper studies an Active Queue Management (AQM) aiming to protect TCP SYN and SYNACK from losses, and evaluates the improvements for short TCP flows and the impacts on long-lived TCP flows. This AQM is an extension based on Random Early Detection (RED). Evaluations are performed in the ns-2 simulator. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the idea supported in a decrease in the transfer delay of short flows and indiscernible effects on large flows.
