Contribution à l'étude interculturelle du développement des catégorisations

Abstract : This paper tries to establish the link between enculturation contexts and the relative importance of two major types of schematic categorization linked by two types of processes (contiguity and substituability). Age/ culture group cross-study evinces differences in the relationships between the two processes that develop at ages 7-8 and 10-11 and in a group of Reunion island vs a group of metropolitan subjects. The findings basically show : - the actualization of the substitutional process is more important in the metropolitan group and the actua¬lization of the contiguous process more important in the Reunion group at 7-8 years old ; - a readjustment (with an increased mobility) takes place between the two categorization types as subjects shift from the 7-8 to the 10-11 age group. Such phenomenon is common to both groups but more marked in the metropolitan group. Inter-category relationships become closer with age in the metropolitan group and have greater variance in the Reunion island group. Findings highlight the evolution of such inter-category relationships and help sketch two development lines in relation to enculturation environments. The paper discusses factors for one prevailing categorization mode.
