Le système de paris et la réputation des hommes-coqs : Une introduction ethnographique autour des combats de coqs au Tampon, île de La Réunion

Abstract : Cockfighting on Reunion Island is a practice carried out by a group of men who call themselves rooster lovers. They learned this custom from their parents. Heirs of this practice, rooster lovers established an ethics code of cock fighting. In this procedure, betting has a special importance: the bets «are like a grain of salt in the fight» says an amateur. How is the reputation of rooster lovers and gamblers built during a cockfight? What are the particularities of this reputation? The aim of this article is to show the social functioning of betting, which could constitute a strategy to avoid the social invisibility of rooster lovers. Based on trust, to gain the reputation evokes the potlatch system.
