Abstract : Based on the iconographic trajectory marked out by Paul Cassien’s sketches and André Blay’s photographs, this paper will critically explore the exotic and identity-establishing landscapes of Reunion Island. It also unveils the changes in perception of this landscape, which notably entails an ‘evaporation’ of the exotic and a ‘condensation’ of identity. This evolution becomes particularly manifest as the island ceases to represent itself as Garden of Eden.
