La responsabilité des Mathématiques Appliquées à la Finance dans la crise, une invitation à la réflexion critique

Abstract : In times of crisis, the hunt for scapegoats is open. The actual financial crisis is no exception to the rule: institutions, banks, rating agencies, individuals, traders and quants, are blamed. However, the public trial of Applied Mathematics in Finance is singular. On one hand, mathematics, identified to rationality, are not victims of a bad reputation and public opinion tends to believe that they cant have negative effects on society, even if they are viewed as tools or as a language for other sciences. On the other hand, a brief controversy in the newspapers has led to an interesting debate. The analysis of speech, especially metaphors, shows that attention was focused on the idea of a real but indirect responsibility. What opinion has tried to understand is a kind of drift, one that D. Dennett has called “peril of Pauline”. It is a responsibility of scientists who do not take into account the special conditions of reception of their speech when they deliver their knowledge.
