La culture populaire péruvienne à l’intérieur de la tradition artistique européenne. Passage et métissage dans la peinture d’Herman Braun-Vega

Abstract : Through three paintings from the Franco-Peruvian painter, Herman Braun-Vega (Lima, 1933), the present article aims to show the cultural mixture, evoked by the artist, considering the established relation between the great masters of European painting ̶ Velázquez, Picasso and Matisse – and the different elements of Peruvian popular culture. The three pieces of art were painted over different periods of the artist’s career, but by using a similar technique. Our critical reflection is divided in two parts. On the one hand, we will pay special attention to the dialogue with the past, by means of the citation process of a piece of artwork and the integration of elements from Peruvian history and culture; on the other hand, considering an intertextual focus, we will discuss the notion of ‘mixture’ in the Peruvian artistic imaginary, as well as its use as tool for understanding social phenomena from a universal perspective.
