La dynamique urbaine à Mayotte : l’étalement de Mamoudzou et la « périphérisation » des centres petits-terriens

Abstract : In the process of becoming a department, the “departmental collectivity” of Mayotte has recently undergone some transformations that were rapid and full of meaning. In fact, to attain the goal of rising in rank by 2010 a necessary standardisation is required, in terms of development and equipment, both at a national and European level. This results in some changes in the use of space that are unequally allocated in “Grande-Terre” and “Petite-Terre”. These alterations affect essentially the most important agglomerations, particularly the center of the department, Mamoudzou, which has become the epicenter of an urban vibrancy that is visible by a significant extension of its outskirts. Moreover, the spreading of Mamoudzou into urban space has taken quite an original form in Petite-Terre, in so far as Dzaoudzi, initially the center of command of the archipelago, resembles more and more a periurban area of the capital city.
