The colonial imaginary in Marius and Ary Leblond’s Reunionese novels. Representation and discourse. In this work we focus on the imaginary and the topic of locations in Leblond’s colonial novels. These novels deal with the colored Other, and describe the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized by using an imaginary principle that we try to define. The Reunionese colonial society is seen by Marius-Ary Leblond through the prism of a doxa, but the narrative ideology is surpassed by something that is built in the very core of the text, without the authors’ knowing. Thus, when the story brings out a poetics of rehashing, which aims to reveal the existence of a white hegemony, this rehashing itself reflects the White’s fear, which is the collapse of the white race, by getting in touch with ethnic groups and therefore leading to miscegenation. This is what we want to bring to light, relying on the way the texts tackle locations, the relationships between people and their conception of their living places and ways of life. These locations appear in the framework of the texts, but they also relate to original places, such as those that, in our view, form part of an identity, which itself is restructured once the “immigrant” Nonwhites settled on the island. Our work aims to define how the expression of relationships between men, in the narratives, makes up a social myth peculiar to the colonial space, and how a colonial imaginary is drawn in the text and in its backgrounds, and leads to dead ends by wanting to assert itself.
