Football is undoubtedly the collective sport that promotes the greatest sense of national
belonging and that favors the deployment of the greatest ritual function of conciliation.
This article examines how, since the first decades of the 20th century, the sports press
and the Argentinian football imagination have constructed a narrative fiction of national
identity regarding the local way of playing football based on certain elements of the
Argentinian rural imagination (such as mud, freedom, the wasteland), of the so-called
national character (cunning) and of a sub-continental anti-colonialist feeling. This
multifaceted fiction covers with political significance the appearance on the national
sports scene of the greatest player of all times, Diego Armando Maradona. The two goals
scored by the Argentinian at the Azteca Stadium on June 22, 1986, condense this
universe.
temps, Diego Armando Maradona.
