Transgression des normes sexuées et violence symbolique. Itinéraire de jeunesse d’une sportive, Marie Marvingt (1875-1939)

Résumé

This paper focuses on the itinerary of pioneer Marie Marvingt (1875-1963) an athlete from the provincial bourgeoisie of Nancy who lived under the Third Republic. We shall observe the forms of transgressions present in her unique journey. Aware of the risks and the experience of an imminent death, Marie Marvingt expressed in a form of ultimate violence towards herself and society her refusal to comply with the interdictions imposed on the women of her generation and condition. Perhaps without having really wished it, her going beyond the limits in sports and aviation then became a political stand, and her moving into action, which was, at the dawn of the Second World War, considered heroic by the press, partake of the renewal of the representations of the "French Woman" in the thirties. The methodology, though including biographical elements, rely on the study of the sporting press but also the feminine or general press.
