Abstract : The analysis of pedagogical documents in Reunion Island during the Third French Republic shows a change in the national acculturation process in which the small homeland sounds more important. Recognized as soon as the 19th century as a national microcosm, the Reunionese identity is nevertherless redefined fter World War 1 in local history. Revisiting the relationships between the great and the small homeland, between the universal and the particular becomes a request fully assumed and justified by the war horrors. The 45 politicians and educators agree to confirm the local roots that cannot be abandoned because of a necessary national integration. Then, the demands are that the Republican culture should take more attention to individual singularities. Colonial Republic is therefore questioned as local cultural specificities are no longer seen with an axiological Hierarchy defining Reunion history in terms of French views.
