Abstract : Introduction: The effects of Therapeutic Patient Education (TPE) are seldom analysed in socially or economically deprived populations with chronic illness. Learning group sessions have been planned in 2011 as part as the implementation of a health management network in Mayotte, a French Département located in Indian Ocean. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse the conditions of the development of a TPE course and the effects of group educational interventions in individual participants with diabetes or obesity in Mayotte. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in 30 participants with heterogeneous profiles. A second interview was conducted for 14 participants who completed at least two learning sessions’ course. Results: Benefits of the TPE course are effectives in all participants, even in the frailest one. However, social contexts and relations are important individual determinants of the level and types of effects. Discussion: These results must be interpreted in relation to a specific learning process centred on individual contexts, taking into account the social dimension of TPE. Conclusion: Chronic patients benefit from TPE, even the most deprived and the frailest, but the TPE practices must be questioned beyond the sole pedagogical dimension and integrate the contextual dimension as well as the social and cultural heterogeneity of each learning individual.
